No Ordinary Hospital
We’ve brought together the best wildlife veterinarians in the country to provide urgent care to threatened and injured Australian animals.
The bushfires that scorch Australia galvanize the world’s attention. According to WWF Australia, over three billion native animals were killed in the catastrophic Black Summer bushfires of 2019-20. Whole populations of our most precious creatures were decimated, often because expert wildlife medical care was not available.
Prior to the bushfires, two Australian veterinarians with a passion for wildlife, Dr. Stephen Van Mil and Dr. Evan Kosack had conceived the plan for a wildlife hospital like none before…one that could go where the injured animals are…and so the Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital was born! Through campaigns that inspired the generous support of conservation organisations, philanthropists, veterinary equipment and medical suppliers, corporate and community partners, we realised a dream to construct and operate Australia’s largest Mobile Wildlife Hospital!
Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital operates from a customised semi-trailer sized veterinary hospital that can be rushed to wherever the wildlife emergency is. Through a planned national rollout, we can facilitate response to treat injured and traumatised native animals, and avoid the suffering our precious wildlife endure during crises events like bushfires. We operate full-time veterinary services for wildlife year round from our base in Byron Bay, working in collaboration with wildlife care groups to provide expert care for native animals impacted by diseases, habitat loss, traffic, urbanisation and pollution.
