Welcome to Brunswick Heads

Simple Pleasures

Come and enjoy the village atmosphere with no large scale resorts or high rise apartments instead hosting a wide range of family friendly accommodation including over 50 boutique apartments, three caravan parks along the river and a number of motels. You don’t have to leave your furry friend at home either with pet friendly places to stay, eat and walk.

Bruns has a range of cafés, renowned restaurants, an iconic newly renovated pub and now after 30 years the curtain is lifted on the Brunswick Picture House with family friendly movies and a monthly ‘cheeky cabaret’ for parents and grandparents to enjoy.

Amongst the natural beauty of the beaches and river there is a unique shopping experience to be had with an eclectic range of boutiques, second hand fare, contemporary Aboriginal art and craft and one of the shire’s famous river front markets every first Saturday of the month.

For those wishing to be pampered there are hairdressers, a Beauty Spa and a range of fitness and wellbeing activities to choose from.
A truly ‘all round’ holiday experience reminiscent of the simple family holidays we used to enjoy with a bit extra thrown in. Great fishing, canoe and kayak hire, a magical new fairy trail and beautiful, child friendly, Torakina Beach.

Located only 15 minutes north of Byron Bay and thirty minutes from the Gold Coast and Ballina Airports, Brunswick Heads simply has something for everyone!

For weddings that are truly original, visually stunning and great fun try Brunswick Heads. Timber bridges link the character-filled village to a lush river with a spectacular surf beach and little hidden treasure at Torakina perfect for your ceremony.

Our local friendly Visitor Centre, Park Street, is open 7 days to help you find and book the perfect simple activity during your stay.

Rivers and Beaches in Brunswick Heads

The Brunswick Heads river has a range of activities including Scenic River Tours from Go Sea Kayaks (highly recommended). The river is split into three sections. The first is North of the main bridge which goes to Torakina beach. This area has the Pirate Ship and access into the water via steps down from the children’s playground. There is a large sheltered picnic tabel area next to this children’s playground as well as several open tables under the row of pine trees that dot the rock wall along the river. The second is between the main bridge and the foot bridge. This area has a very small sand area at low tide in the corner next to the main bridge. The park for this section has a toilet block, two sets of swings, a small children’s playground, a BBQ, tables and a small undercover amphitheatre attached to the rear of the toilet block. The Foot bridge at the Southern end of this section connects through to the SLSC and the main beach. The third section is South of the foot bridge and borders the Reflections Holiday Park – Terrace Reserve. This area is great for kayaks/canoes with a mangrove system a bit further South. There is also a small sand area if you go towards the main beach, over the footbridge and down to the right. This can be a good place to access this section. For tide times click HERE.

Torakina beach is a small, sheltered beach located off S Beach Road, over the bridge. Park in the car beach directly after the bridge. If parking is full there are further parks all the way along and down towards the Brunswick Surf Life Saving Club. Be aware that parking along that stretch is strictly nose in and you can get a fine if not parked correctly. From the main car park walk through the grassy area until you reach the beach. The grassy area is perfect for picnics and includes sheltered picnic tables, toilet facilities and cold outdoor showers. Due to the surrounding rock walls and recessed location within the river entrance, Torakina beach is almost always calm and safe making it ideal for families with children. The water is fairly shallow but will drop off into deeper water further out. The water can at times suck out a bit and then come back in so be careful that small children don’t run out and then get caught in the water when it comes back in. This is one of the best beach locations for an easy and relaxing day out.

The main beach runs from Brunswick Heads and eventually merges into Byron Bay. From the main car park, near Torakina beach, walk out along the sealed path until you reach the beach entrance or continue out to the end of the rock wall for an ideal viewing position. A fantastic beach for running and sporting activities but swimmers be cautious of rips and only experienced surfers are recommended. This beach has not only a double bar system dominated by rips, but a prominent rip that runs out against the southern training wall, in addition to strong tidal currents and breaking waves between the training walls. Never swim in the river mouth, between the rock walls, where it meets the wider ocean as it is an extremely dangerous spot.

To safeguard the bathers and fishermen, the Brunswick Surf Life Saving Club was formed in 1935. The Brunswick SLSC is responsible for patrolling the area from the Belongil Creek mouth in the south to the surf beaches of New Brighton and South Golden Beach to the north on weekends and public holidays from September to April each year.
