About Byron Bay & The Triathlon

Byron Bay is a beachside town located by Cape Byron, Australia’s most easterly point. Byron Bay is a favourite tourist spot in the northeastern corner of New South Wales. It is located 772 kilometres north of Sydney and 165 kilometres south of Brisbane. The town (approx. population 6,000) is the nucleus of Byron Shire, which has approx. 30,000 residents.

The local Arakwal Aboriginal people’s name for the area is Cavvanbah, meaning “meeting place”. Lieutenant James Cook named Cape Byron after Naval officer John Byron, circumnavigator of the world and grandfather of the poet Lord Byron.

The lighthouse, built in 1901, punctuates a beautiful stretch of Australia’s coastline. Longboard surfers arrived in the 1960s and used natural breaks at The Pass, Watego’s, and Cosy Corner. This was the beginning of Byron Bay’s reputation as a tourist destination. Today the area is a favourite with cashed-up retirees and foodies from southern states, and a horde of international tourists.

Byron Bay offers an idyllic world class venue for the Byron Bay Triathlon, at the end of the triathlon season. It’s an event like no other, in a beautiful setting with so many options for a perfect seaside holiday.

Triathlon in Byron Bay is steeped in history and is now in its 23rd year. It is an Olympic Distance event and attracts around 1,200 competitors from many different countries. Traditionally it is held on the Mother’s Day weekend every year and signals the last race in the QLD/NSW triathlon calendar. As a result, it is often seen as an end of season party for many competitors with a big party on the Saturday night. Due to its fantastic location, many competitors also bring their family, stay for a week and relax in the beautiful Byron Shire.

The Byron Bay Tri is regarded by many as one of the friendliest triathlons on the coast. Competitors enjoy a 1.5km ocean swim in the crystal clear, tranquil waters of Byron Bay; a 40km cycle past rainforest, coastal bush and the gently rolling farmland of Northern NSW; then top it all off with a run along the foreshore, under the picturesque Byron Bay Lighthouse.
